UPDATE 1/23/09: Tom Hanks has retained some of his class after all. He recanted his original assessment that LDS support for Prop 8 was un-American (see here for our initial post). He still believes that Prop 8 is discrimination, but I can respect his opinion based on the merits and not on ad hominem statements. At least he showed some character by admitting he may have gone overboard. Aubrey O'Day, however, is probably still clueless.

The PEOPLE article states: "A spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kim Farah, took offense at Hanks's comments"
Bad choice of words by the author - "took offense." We didn't take offense, per se, but were confused as to how exercising our civic duty could be anything but American.
We have many types of codified discrimination. Some we are willing to live with (mandatory draft for men not women) and others not (age discrimination). We as a society are still not to the point where a majority believe it is worth protecting that class.
That is classy to take it back. I wonder how much mail/email and other reaction he got.
As far as O'day...I can think of many things I could say, but I won't put them on this blog. It just wouldn't be right. I do think you should keep her picture up. Every time you are going to put up a pic of a GA, just put her in there.
I'd like to know why he really issued an apology. It seems to me that he didn't like the bad press he was getting. I tend to believe things that actually come out of people's mouths versus things that are stated through lawyers (as his "apology" obviously was.)
Usually a public apology from a publicist is not sincere, but I guess we can only guess what his intentions were. At least he was man enough to do that, while others would have stuck to their guns.
